SELF INSTALLATION

Homeowner Self Installation Guide

Anka Lithium Battery Powered Smoke Alarms are cost effective and simple to set up and install.  It is perfectly legal for a homeowner to self-install battery powered alarms.  You cannot however self-install Hardwired Alarms. You will require the services of a licensed electrician.

Before installing, please read this guide, including how to pair your alarms to each other and where and where not to install.

HOW TO PAIR YOUR ALARMS

Remove your new Anka Smoke Alarms from the packaging and place in a row on a table.

  1. Turn on each alarm by moving the off/on switch located on the underside of the alarm to the on position. (2 clicks when moving the switch). If you have ordered a remote - Remove the plastic battery guard from inside the battery compartment.
  2. One of your alarms will act as a 'Master' alarm. The remaining alarms will be paired to the master.  Put one alarm to one side. We will now set that alarm to be the master.
  3. Press and hold down the centre button on the top of the master alarm until you count THREE GREEN LIGHTS then release.  This alarm (master) will now flash rapidly RED for one minute whilst you pair your remaining alarms.
  4. For each of your remaining alarms - One alarm at a time - Press and hold the centre button until you count TWO GREEN LIGHTS then release.  After you release, the alarm will flash red twice to confirm pairing has been successful.
  5. Now pair your remote - Press and hold down the test button until you count TWO RED LIGHTS then release. After you release, the remote will flash red twice to confirm pairing has been successful.
  6. Now test - Press the remote test button and check that each alarm activates. A red light will flash on each alarm. The alarms will sound for around 10 seconds and will silence automatically.

HINT

The master alarm will flash red rapidly for just one minute waiting for your other alarms to be paired. If after 1 minute you have not paired all alarms, then simply go back to POINT 3 above and continue the pairing process. Any alarm paired in the first one minute will remain paired, no need to do these alarms again.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Alarm fails to pair (does not activate when tested) do the following.

Press and hold the centre button on the failed alarm until you count FOUR GREEN LIGHTS then release. After you release, the alarm will flash red twice confirming that the alarm is cleared of data and has been returned to factory status. Now refer from POINT 3 above and retry to pair the alarm.

Remote fails to pair.

Press and hold the test button on the remote until you count FOUR RED LIGHTS then release. After you release, the alarm will flash red twice confirming that the remote is cleared of data and has been returned to factory status. Now refer from POINT 3 above and retry to pair the remote.

WHERE TO INSTALL YOUR ALARMS

Where practicable smoke alarms must be placed on the ceiling. Smoke alarms must not be placed:

i) within 300mm of a corner of a ceiling and a wall

ii) within 300mm of a light fitting

iii) within 400mm of an air-conditioning vent

iv) within 400mm of the blades of a ceiling fan.

There are special requirements for stairways, sloping ceilings, and ceilings with exposed beams. These requirements are explained in the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. Penalties may be imposed for non-compliance with the law.

Smoke Alarm Law Changes

Recent changes in legislation have made it necessary for home owners  in Queensland to have an interconnected smoke alarm system installed prior settlement.  Landlords are also obliged to upgrade to an interconnected system.
