Fire alarm requirements differ from one state to the other. Click on the link in your relevant state if you need to research what you need to install to be compliant.
By 2027 all residential properties in Queensland must have photoelectric, interconnected alarms installed. Where there are existing hardwired alarms, these alarms must be replaced with new hardwired interconnected alarms. Any additional alarms can be battery powered.
In Victoria newly built properties from 1st Aug 1997 must have hardwired smoke alarms installed at the time of construction. Prior to this date battery alarms are permitted.

There are a number of requirements and options in South Australia. The recommendation is to ensure interconnected alarms are installed.
In Western Australia, under normal circumstances, hardwired interconnected alarms are required.
